84-Year-Old Bedridden Man Walks Again After Advanced Spine Surgery
An 84-year-old man who was confined to bed for nearly two months because of severe back pain is now back on his feet, thanks to timely diagnosis, advanced and modern spinal surgical techniques.
This elderly gentleman came to our spine opd complaining of severe lower back pain , progressively worsening over a period of two months. He was not able to sit, stand, or walk due to intense pain leaving him completely bedridden and dependent.
After a through clinical evaluation, radiological investigations like X ray , MRI along with blood investigations were done. Investigations were pointing towards L5/S1 spondylodiscitis ,a kind of spine infection, that had led to significant bone destruction and instability of the spine.
Day to day activities , as simple as sitting or standing would lead to significant abnormal movement that would cause intense back pain. The patient and his attendants had visited multiple hospitals and surgery was advised as a primary management. As the patient was in his 80’s with multiple coexisting medical conditions , attendants were fearful about surgery and managed with just the oral medications.In scenarios like this , medications alone will not be sufficient enough and it also requires stabilization of the spine.
Attendants were counselled regarding the need for the procedure and early mobilization for faster recovery. Patient underwent spinopelvic fixation procedure to stabilize the affected spine. The procedure was performed using advanced surgical techniques where O arm and computer assisted navigation were used.These advanced technologies would help to visualise the spine in three dimensions during the procedure and in turn the precision of screw placement increases exponentially.
During the procedure, a biopsy was also taken from the infected area to know the exact pathogen leading to infection.
Patient was able to sit up and walk with support soon after the surgery. There was a significant improvement in his back pain and it was encouraging to see the patient back on his feet despite being bedridden for almost two months.
Eventually the biopsy reports confirmed that the spinal infection was caused by tuberculosis (TB) and the patient was started on anti-tubercular medications to help eliminate the infection while the stabilized spine heals.
Two important messages to be noted from this case
First, complex spine surgeries have been made much safer and more accurate with advanced modern technologies like O-arm imaging ,robotic and navigation guidance. These advancements help surgeons perform delicate procedures with great precision.
Second, age should never be the only criteria to decide the need for surgery, it’s about the overall health and expected quality of life which is more important that just the age. Careful selection of patients helps in speedy recovery , back to being mobile and independent.
Timely diagnosis and treatment would help patients to overcome pain and regain an active and independent life. This patient’s journey serves as a reminder that with the right diagnosis, modern technology, and appropriate treatment can achieve excellent outcomes and return to a better quality of life.
